PAULUS POTTER, A COW, BLACK CHALK
Although his drawings are now rare on the market, numerous similar studies of animals, made from life by Potter in black chalk and with great economy, can be found in museums (for an example, see B. Broos in Paulus Potter. Schilderijen, Tekeningen en etsen, , exhib. cat., The Hague, Mauritshuis, 1994-1995, nos. 39, 44, ill.). A striking comparison for the head of the cow is a signed study at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 2013.606).

Lot Essay
