4° (263 x 203mm). 7 folding engraved plates depicting electrical machines and experiments, one additional engraved advertisement at end. (Some offsetting from plates, repair to corner of A3, small hole to Oo4, occasional faint spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf (rebackd, corners and fore-edge repaired, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Joseph Henry Butterworth (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. ‘Though primarily remembered for his work with gases’, states Norman, ‘Priestley was also the first historian of electricity. He was encouraged to write the History by his friend Benjamin Franklin, who helped corrects its proofs’. Norman 1748.
