Lot Essay

The seven Buddhas carved on this bowl are collectively known as the Seven Buddhas of the Past : Vipasyin, Sikhin, Visvabhu, Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kasyapa and Sakyamuni. An other wood example is the Palace Museum, Beijing, dated 1758, and illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing 2002, p.73. Compare also with a very similar example in carved celadon jade illustrated in Jades, Gems of Beijing Cultural Relics Series, Beijing Publishing House 2002, p.207, no.250
