Through the Royal Ontario Museum, he developed his skills as a naturalist. He began his career teaching geography and art, travelling extensively and painting constantly. He demonstrated great expertise as a scientific illustrator, but also painted in impressionist and abstract styles. Returning to realism and to wildlife subjects in 1964, he soon became recognised as a rare and exciting talent with highly successful exhibitions in Great Britain, The United States and Canada. The work of Bateman has brought new vitality and distinction to the world of wildlife art. Meticulously detailed and carefully composed paintings of birds and mammals have been received with incredible enthusiasm both by the public and authorities in the field. His work is included in the collections of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh and the Late Princess Grace of Monaco. He has allowed many of his paintings to be used to raise funds for conservation. Since his first sell-out exhibition in 1967, his work continues to attract universal interest and admiration.
