Lot Essay

Research has shown that this distinctive gilet was worn by Daltrey on various occasions in 1968. Video footage of The Who playing at the Opera House, Aurora, Illinois on 10th March, 1968, included in the 1979 video The Kids Are Alright; during their tour of Australia in January, 1968, and at the Winterland Auditorium, San Francisco on 23rd February, 1968, all show Daltrey performing on stage wearing this garment.

The vendor, a dancer and actress, was sent tickets for Top Of The Pops by the show's floor manager on a regular basis between 1966-1969. She gave some of these to her friends who were dancers to encourage them to appear on the show. She was given this gilet by a close friend, Steve Ellis of the group Love Affair who was good friends with Daltrey at that time.
