Lot Essay

The Yacht Master Cosmograph is a prototype model that was produced in very few examples. The watch is stamped with reference number 6239, and features several attributes found on the Paul Newman model of the same reference, in particular, the engraved steel bezel and stylized subsidiary dials.

Even though Rolex registered the Yacht Master name in the 1950s, it was not used on a production model until the 1990s. It can be concluded that the present lot represents a brief period of experimentation with the nautical theme.

The Yacht Master Cosmograph is a vital collector's timepiece as it closely resembles the Paul Newman Daytona - a model associated with automobile racing - yet it is a prototype model that was intended for use offshore.
