Lot Essay

The present work re-emerged in 1990 as the focal point for Gillespie's large public sculpture The Kiss on Earlsfort Terrace, opposite the Concert Hall in Dublin.

The artist comments that it depicts 'that tingly tentative moment just before lips touch for the first time' (private correspondence 26 August 2011).
