MAPUCHE SCEPTER

The ceremonial scepter, clava, with a tubular shaft surmounted by a highly stylized head of an avian, possibly representing a macaw, the gaping beak finely incised on both sides with a pattern of radiating stylized feathers encircling an eye incised with a star motif; in brown stone.

These enigmatic stone implements are interpreted as possible insignias of authority of the ancient peoples occupying modern day southern Chile.

Lot Essay

Sceptre cérémoniel en pierre brune (clava ou clé-insigne) constitué d’un manche tubulaire surmonté d’un tête très stylisée aviforme évoquant un perroquet à la bouche grande ouverte et décorée de motifs incisés rayonnants suggérant les plumes de l’oiseau avec un grand œil circulaire comportant un motif d’étoile stylisée.
