Lot Essay
The present composition compares to two other scenes of Christ on the Road to Calvary painted by Barabino (one with the Rizzi Gallery in Sestri Levante and another in the Convent of the Monache Turchine in San Cipriano; see P. Pagano and M. C. Galassi, La pittura del '600 a Genova, Milan, 1988, nos. 64-5). The facial types are very distinctive, the composition and the particular format which makes the canvas appear as if it had been cut are based on the same model and the little blond boy appears in all three paintings, as if he was playfully following the procession.
The similarities between these three works suggest that they were once part of a set of paintings depicting the Via Crucis.
