Lot Essay

In March 1924 Munnings sailed to New York for his sole visit to the United States and Canada. He had been enlisted as one of the judges of the 23rd Annual International Exhibition at Pittsburgh by Homer St Gaudens, the Director of the Carnegie Institute. Whilst there he completed many portrait commissions, enjoying the hospitality provided by the sitters and their families. The present sketch would have been executed whilst on the trip and shows the artist painting a model seated on a wooden horse, whilst balanced precariously on his chair.

We are grateful to Lorian Peralta-Ramos for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
