Lot Essay

Wilkie arrived in Constantinople in 1840 where his imagination was captured by its inhabitants, their dress and dwellings. The drawings from this period, which were well received, have an even greater poignancy as Wilkie never returned from this trip, dying at sea on his journey home in 1841.
