THE ANASTASIS
RUSSIAN, 19TH CENTURY
The contrapostal figure of Christ is represented against a bright mandorla with golden rays. He tramples on the broken doors of Hades, blesses with his right hand which is raised in a victorious manner, and drags Adam. In the foreground, Eve is kneeling in supplication as she steps out of the open mouth of the monster that personifies Hell. The crowd behind represents the Just people of the Old Testament, who were also raised by Christ during the Anastasis. To the right, John the Baptist, holding a scroll, thus indicating that he preached of Christ's Coming in the underworld, as he had previously done on earth. The scene is supplemented by the killing of devil by an angel at the bottom right and the apparition of Christ after his Anastasis to the portrayed saints.
The event in the Hades is rendered with deeper colours, as opposed to the brighter, pastel colours employed for the construction in the background.
12¼ x 13 7/8 in. (31.25 x 35.25 cm)
