THE SPANISH FORGER (active c.1890 - 1920), a medieval scene depicting the return of a conquering hero, painted on foil
[Paris, c.1900]
145 x 115mm. A lady and another couple wait on the shore as soldiers return home by boat. In the background, steep mountains and a medieval castle, with the sun rising against the horizon as the boat makes its way across rolling waves. Celebrated as 'one of the most successful, skilful and prolific forgers of all time' (see Manuscript Illumination in the Modern Age, 2001, p.157), the so-called Spanish Forger was active in painting striking original 'medieval' miniatures in Paris between the 1890s and 1920s (see W. Voelkle, The Spanish Forger, New York, 1978). The present scene, painted on foil, is an attractive example of the artist's distinctive style. It is listed in Voelkle's ongoing census as P93.
