Passage of the Douro, Oporto Liberated, 1809 - a design for the Wellington shield

The Wellington Shield was a gift to the Duke of Wellington from the City merchants and bankers. Stothard won the design competition over such contenders as Westall and Smirke. The shield was completed in 1821 and is now at Apsley House, London.
