Late 17th Century, the first silver-mounted, perhaps Scottish
The first with curved single-edged blade back-edged towards the point and with ricasso chiselled in low relief with a monster's head, with traces of gilding, short vertically recurved quillons (loose) with fluted globular tips, cap-pommel with domed top embossed and chased in relief with a gilt male face, and natural staghorn grip with deep ferrule at the base, all the silver parts struck with a maker's mark GS over a pellet in a shield; the second English, with similar blade, struck on each face with a crowned head mark, iron hilt comprising slender rear quillon with downbent lobe tip, slender knuckle-guard with double central moulding, bonnet-shaped cap-pommel, and natural staghorn grip (split), the iron parts with traces of engraved foliage (heavily rust patinated throughout)
