16TH CENTURY
One of hexalobed shape, decorated on top with scholars, an official and an attendant standing beside a pine tree on the banks of a lake, with further figural scenes on the shoulder and above the foot, the straight sides with diaper pattern, interior and base lacquered in red and the base with an inscribed and gilt-filled Jiajing six-character mark; the other box of circular shape decorated on top with a scene of a figure seated in a lakeside pavilion peering down at another scholar seated in a boat in the lake from which rise a pierced rock and towering grasses, within a diaper border, with panels of foliate meander and diaper on the sides, interior lacquered red
