Lot Essay

The present drawing is an early work by the artist. There is a suggestion that it is a preliminary sketch for a painting exhibited at the British Institute in 1851 but this has not been traced. Penkhill Castle Ayrshire, was home to Bell Scott and his companion Alice Boyd and visited on many occasions by artists such as William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Arthur Hughes and other Pre-Raphaelite artists.
