PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE GERMAN COLLECTOR The following ten works were purchased by the owner over a period of some twenty-five years. They reflect a keen interest in Expressionism and particularly in high quality works on paper. Of particular interest to the collector were the watercolours and temperas of Rohlfs and Schmidt-Rottluff. The latter were purchased directly from the artist who became a close friend.

The present watercolour closely relates to Feininger's celebrated painting Dunes at Eventide (H. 376) in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. As Hans Hess remarked, "In these landscapes, Feininger reached a poetic simplicity and clarity that borders on the abstract - not in the sense of nonobjective but in the sense of essential. The poetry of the world is the content of Feininger's pictures".
