Lot Essay
Copied in nasta'liq and signed 'The servant (of God) Shah Mahmud al-Nishapuri wrote it in the Capital Tabriz during the year 939' (AD 1532-3).
Shah Mahmud Nishapuri (d. circa AH 989/1581-82 AD), a companion scribe of Shah Tahmasp, worked at the Royal Library in Tabriz together with other scribes and painters. After the Shah's change towards manuscript productions, he left for Mashhad, where he spent the rest of his life copying manuscripts.
His recorded work is dated between AH 923/1517 AD and AH 979/1571 AD and includes numerous manuscripts and calligraphic pages, and the earliest dated copy of the Qur'an in nasta'liq now in the Topkapi (Mehdi Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. I & II, Teheran, 1345 & 1346 sh., pp. 295-307. This piece, as mentioned in the colophon was written in Tabriz and must have been during his work at the Royal Library of Shah Tahmasp.
