Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1989 and its subsequent sale on July 14th of the same year. Further accompanied by a Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 1989, product literature, Patek Philippe leather envelope, Patek Philippe presentation box, setting pin, tie-tag and outer packaging.
Reference 3970 is the third model of the revered Patek Philippe perpetual chronograph family. It was preceded by legendary references 1518 and 2499, and followed by references 5970 in 2004 and the current 5270.
This reference underwent some upgrades and modifications over the years. At the beginning, when it was produced in 1986, it was fitted with a snap on solid (ref. 3970) or sapphire crystal (ref. 3971) back. In 1987 the same version was introduced with a screw back, solid or sapphire crystal and was named 3970E (E for ètanche: waterproof) and 3971E. Eventually the two references were merged and reference 3970 was delivered with both solid and sapphire crystal screw backs.
The present model with its solid screw back from 1989 is from the second series of this legendary reference. Only approximately 650 of this reference were ever made however the present white gold version is the rarest whereby only 4 are known to market and to the best of our knowledge this model has never before been offered in public.
The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 305.
