Lot Essay

Russian military agent with the French army during the Seven Years War, at the victory over the Turks and concluded the Peace of Kuchuk-Kainadzhi, ambassador in Berlin and Warsaw, in 1796 general governor of Belorussia and later in Riga.
A similar large portrait by Ivashkevich is illustrated in Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov, Russkie portrety [...], St. Petersburg, 1905-1909, IV, no. 120. Levitskii's version of 1792 is illustrated in the 1987 catalogue of his works by G. N. Goldovskii et al., no. 77.
