Lot Essay

This particular painting from 1980 is a subtle example that directly represents the transition between Raza's 70s and 80s style and one of his first forays into the depiction of the bindu. The background still retains the transparent earthy colors and loosened composition that is forming into more structured geometry. According to G. Sen, "The change in Raza's creative philosophy has manifested itself in very specific ways on his canvas. The strong element of spontaneity seen in the earlier works is now replaced with a carefully conceived image, where "thinking precedes the act of painting." (G. Sen, Bindu: Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi, 1997, p. 11.)
