Verdi struggles to be polite but unfortunately misspells his fellow composer's name as Gounoud. When a composer has written operas that have been able to achieve a thousand performances in a single country what more can one say to add to his glory?

This letter is published in George Martin, Verdi, His Music, Life and Times, London, 1965, pp.464-5.
