Lot Essay

Wendy Baron comments, 'The area which Sickert called 'La Halle au Lin' was renamed rue Ste Catherine in the early 19th century. Perhaps in earlier times there had been a flax market on the street. The cross (just visible in paintings of the South Façade of St Jacques) within the open space between the south-west corner of St Jacques and rue Ste Catherine marks the former cemetary' (see W. Baron, loc. cit, 2006).
