WARREN, Robert Penn. Band of Angels. New York: Random House, 1955.
8o. Original tan cloth (a bit soiled); printed dust jacket (some light edgewear). Provenance: JOHN CROWE RANSOM (1888-1974), American poet (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WARREN TO JOHN CROWE AND HIS WIFE ROBB RANSOM on the front free endpaper: "To John and Robb with, as always, best love, Red August 22, 1955."
Ransom was Warren's professor at Vanderbilt University in the 1920s and the two taught there together. According to his biographer, Joseph Blotner, Warren treated Ransom's house as a second home. Ransom was "a model poet for Warren and a kind of father figure" (unpublished letter). Warren noted: "[Ransom] made no effort to court the students, but I found him fascinating... He was the first poet I had ever seen, a real life poet in pants and vest. I read his first book of poems and discovered he was making poetry out of a world I knew: it came home to me" (Robert Penn Warren Talking: Interviews 1950-1978, pp.225-6). Grimshaw A12a(1).
