Leitch is best known in his capacity as Drawing Master to Queen Victoria. He also served as vice-president of the N.W.S. from 1862 to 1882. Early on in his career he travelled through Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The erroneous caption in the 1998 publication can be excused as the broad washes of the present watercolour are much in the style of Peter de Wint, with whom Leitch undoubtedly had contact through the Cheney family of Badger Hall, Shropshire.
