DALMAU DE ROCABERTI, Raimundo. Presagios fatales del mando francés en Cataluña. Zaragoza: Pedro Lanaja y Lamarca, 1646. 4° (194 x 144mm). (Small repairs to title, first quire, and a few other leaves, C1 and K4 with long closed tears, heavy soiling to M3-N4 and S2-3, some browning, particularly affecting quires Q-R and T, more extensive repairs to final quire, some glitter effect after cleaning.) Brown morocco gilt by Kehmenegilgo Miralles, sides with the onlaid red cross of Barcelona on a square ground of dots, the surrounding field semé with marguerites, spine compartments tooled with dots and volutes, gilt turn-ins and edges, red and orange silk marker. Provenance: bought from José Porter, 1957.
FINELY BOUND BY MIRALLES for an unknown Catalonian collector. The 1640 revolt in Catalonia, known as 'the Reapers' War', embroiled Spain in a larger war with France as many Catalan nobles allied themselves with Louis XIII. This work, by a member of the Rocaberti family, argues against the adoption of French rule. Goldsmith D-7; Palau IV, 68170.
