(Half-title used as front pastedown, text leaf M1 with large tear repaired to verso, X1 and accompanying plate with old paper repair at gutter, a little light creasing and soiling.) [Bound with:] -- Over de voortteeling en wonderbaerlyke veranderingen der surinaamsche insecten. Amsterdam: J. Frederic Bernard, 1730. 2° (550 x 380mm). Engraved title vignette and 72 plates. (Final text leaf with blank verso used as rear pastedown, pl. 67 lightly spotted, light soiling, more heavily affecting a few plates towards the end.) 2 works bound in one, 2° (520x 365mm), late 18th-/early 19th-century boards, pink paper label with manuscript title to upper cover (remains of backstrip detached, rubbed).

FIRST FOLIO EDITION OF THESE FUNDAMENTAL WORKS BY MERIAN. Previously published in 4° format only, these editions were seen through the press by Merian's daughter, Johanna Helena, who added another 12 plates to this second Dutch edition of Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, and appear here in print for the first time. 'Artistic groupings of the insects amid the tropical flora makes this book one of the most beautiful and unusual in the whole range of natural history' (Landwehr p.28).
