Walter Crane was born in Liverpool, the second son of the Portrait painter Thomas Crane. He was both a founder member of the Art Workers' Guild and also was the first president of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Crane produced several designs for Pilkington including the 'Night and Morning' charger, the 'Sea Maiden' vase and a bowl decorated with the same lions as this vase. The juxtaposition of the lions and the fleur-de-lys suggest it could have been produced for a Franco-British exhibition similar to that organised in 1908.
