[DICKENS, Charles, contributor]. The Monthly Magazine. London: A. Robertson, July to December 1833-January to June 1835.
Eight extracts by Dickens in one volume, 8° (210 x 135mm). Four volume titles also bound in. Extra-illustrated with tipped-in portrait of Dickens after J. Stephenson. (Vol. titles and last leaf of text laid down, some soiling and spotting, a few neat repairs.) Later green morocco gilt (spine sunfaded). Provenance: Comte Alain de Suzannet (his inscription on verso of first title; his sale Sotheby's London, 22 November 1971, lot 1) -- Kenyon Starling (label) -- William E. Self (his sale, Christie's New York, 2 April 2008, lot 1).
FIRST PRINTING OF DICKENS'S FIRST PUBLISHED STORY. The printing of "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" (later retitled "Mr. Minns and His Cousin") in the December 1833 issue was the young author's first breakthrough. His "first effusion" had been "dropped stealthily one evening at twilight, with fear and trembling, into a dark letter-box, in a dark office, up a court, in Fleet Street" (quoted by Kitton, Minor Writings, p. 1). The story is here bound with seven others, all first published in The Monthly Magazine which had a circulation of about 600 in the early 1830s. All were subsequently collected in Sketches by Boz. Sold with the 1933 facsimile edition of "A Dinner at Poplar Walk", one of 50 copies marking the centenary of its first publication. Gimbel E125-E126.
