Lot Essay

The present painting belongs to a small group of works by an anonymous Leonardesque artist now commonly referred to as the Master of the Vierge aux Balances after the work in the Louvre. This painter, a close follower of the style of Leonardo's second Milanese period, has been linked to two other portraits, the first in the Kress Collection (South Carolina, Columbia Museum of Art; F.R. Shapley, Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, London, 1968, K1558, fig. 320) and the other formerly in the d'Eichtal Collection, Paris. Works from this group have previously been ascribed to Boltraffio, Bernardino de'Conti and Ambrogio de Predis.
