The armoured backplate of circular form with radiating ribs around a central boss, chain mail attaching three sides plates, St Irene arsenal mark, together with a helmet of shallow ribbed domed form with chain mail skirt, together with a chain mail shirt, areas of corrosion

Lot Essay

Similar helmets were captured after the siege of Vienna in 1684. Two examples are among the booty in Karlsruhe (Ernst Petrasch et al, Die Karlsruher Tüurkenbeute, Munich, 1991, nos.23 and 24, p.89) while another is in Dresden (Im Lichte des Halbmonds, exhibition catalogue, Dresden, 1995, p.162).
