A VERY FINE AND RARE CASED 25-BORE OVER-AND-UNDER DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION HOWDAH PISTOL

With blued tapering barrel-block of flattened octagonal section, the sides each engraved with a spray of scrollwork, the upper sighting flat sighted, signed ‘SAM.L & C. SMITH. LONDON’ and engraved with a spray of scrollwork above the breeches, the latter each with platinum plug, blued standing breech engraved with scrollwork, the upper-tang incorporating the rear-sight, the lower tang forming the trigger-plate, case-hardened bolted signed scroll engraved back-action locks, each hammer with detachable nose for Imperial Caps, finely figured chequered hooked walnut butt shaped for shooting down from a howdah, silver escutcheon engraved with a crest, blued scroll engraved trigger-guard, blued under-rib and stirrup ramrod, and retaining much original finish throughout (some flaking to barrel-block), London proof marks, in original fitted oak case lined in green baize with original accessories including a fine Sykes cylindrical pistol-flask, a ‘W.D’ iron ball-mould, wrenches, and bags of balls and large shot, the lid with Samuel & Charles Smith trade label stating ‘Gun Makers to His Majesty & His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester’ and ‘Sons of the Late William Smith’, the exterior with large brass escutcheon incorporating a flush-fitting carrying-handle
