Although the present drawing had traditionally been given to Jan de Bisschop, Jane Shoaf Turner and Robert Jan te Rijdt proposed an attribution to Nicolaas Verkolje. It can be compared to a drawing by Verkolje showing the same sculpture, possibly by François Duquesnoy (1597-1643), from a different angle, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. 7816; J. Shoaf Turner and C. White, op. cit., pp. 324-7). Two further drawings after the same sculpture are known, one in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (inv. 24.290), the other in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (RP-T-1960-53). Two drawings by Cornelis Visscher (1628-1658) after the sculpture were offered in these Rooms, 8 December 2000, lot 41, now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. 2002.421.1-2), while two others are in the Nationalmuseet, Stockholm (inv. nos. 1873-1874-1863)
