Lot Essay

A teapot and two teabowls and saucers with similar pavilions and rockwork were sold in these Rooms on 30th March 1987, lots 165-166. The borders were more simple and the teabowls and saucers bore crossed swords in underglaze blue and enamel. A bowl with similar decoration, probably from the same service, is illustrated by Ulrich Pietsch, 'Early Meissen Porcelain' Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte der Hansestadt Lübeck, 14th November 1993-31st January 1994, and others 26th February-30th April 1994 Exhibition Catalogue (Lübeck, 1993), pp. 70-71, no. 56, where he discusses the differences between the 'opal lustre' used by Stadler here, and Böttger lustre.
