A CARVED AND PIERCED LONGQUAN CELADON GARDEN SEAT
MING DYNASTY, SECOND HALF 15TH CENTURY

Of barrel form, the sides carved and pierced with two Buddhistic lions with brocade balls amidst peonies and other flowers and with scattered cloud wisps, between key-fret borders and bands of applied floriform bosses, the base with freely incised demi-blossoms, the slightly domed top carved with diaper pattern above lotus scroll on the sides, all under a glaze of sea-green tone

A similar celadon garden seat, yet not as crisply carved, is illustrated by J. Ayers and R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum Istambul, vol. 1, London, 1986, p. 374, no. 546, where it is also dated to the second half of the 15th century.
