Colorfully enameled with the accollée arms of Bal and Cats flanked by male and female figures holding palms, a ribbon below inscribed S:BAL 1779. L:CATS, comprising:
A teapot, cover and stand
A tea caddy and cover
A cream jug
A sugar bowl
A pair of teabowls and saucers

Lot Essay

Kroes explains (ibid, pp 443-444) that Leendart Cats and Susanna Bal of Middleburg, born sometime in the second quarter of the 18th century, likely ordered this service to celebrate an anniversary.
