A FINE PAIR OF WUCAI 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' BOWLS
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The exterior of each is enamelled with an iron-red and a green dragon pursuing flaming pearls amidst floral sprays, sperated by descending phoenixes, all beneath a narrow band of ruyi-linked bajixiang, the interior with a central medallion containing an iron-red dragon and flaming pearl amid green flames

Lot Essay

A bowl of this pattern with a Qianlong seal mark in the Qing Court Collection is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, vol. 38, Beijing, 1999, p. 148, no. 136. An earlier, Kangxi, version of this pattern can be seen on p. 147, no. 135. Compare also another Qianlong-marked bowl with this decoration in the Ohmer Collection, Roemer Museum, illustrated by Wiesner in Chinesisches Porzellan, Mainz am Rhein, 1981, no. 123.
