A FINELY CARVED SMALL BLACK AND RED LACQUER INCENSE BOX AND COVER

Of circular form, carved to both the cover and base through the layers of black lacquer to the red ground beneath the with a large peony blossom surrounded by leaves and further smaller flowerheads continuing down the sides, the leaves and petals finely incised, the interior lacquered black

Boxes with carved designs both to the cover and base are rare. A red lacquer box of similar design carved on both sides was sold in these Rooms, 28 November 2005, lot 138.
