A George III mahogany longcase clock, circa 1795
The hood with dentil cornices to a pagoda top with brass ball and spire finials, outset brass-capped fluted columns, the line inlaid breakarch trunk door flanked by fluted three-quarter columns, the plinth on stylised bracket feet and with wavy apron, the 12in. engraved brass dial with floral lower spandrels and swags in the arch around the signature Nichols & Son NEWPORT Isle of Wight, the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with subsidiary seconds and date rings, pierced black painted hands, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, with later seatboard -- 94in. (239cm.) high
