Lot Essay

This style of box is lavishly illustrated in the Rijksmuseum's catalogue "Sawasa", Japanese Export Art in black and gold 1650-1800. The text states that although most of these non-silver boxes are thought to be Japanese, the Japanese copied Chinese decoration and often a pastiche form of that decoration, in this case the decoration is typically Chinese
