A silver and silver gilt chess set, late 18th/early 19th century
possibly Nrnberg, the royal pieces with bobbin turned and baluster knopped uprights, the cone-shaped knops cut with concentric discs, the bishops with ball knop finials on baluster knopped stems, the knights with horses heads, the rooks of tapering cylindrical form with domed tops and mushroom-shaped finials, the pawns with baluster stems and ball knop finials, the circular bases with the maker's marks A.L., a cruciform mark and the number 13, the kings 3½in. (9cm.) high, the pawns 1.3/8in. (3.5cm.) high
