A VICTORIAN 4-PIECE SILVER PRESENTATION TEA & COFFEE SET WITH ACCOMPANYING SCOTTISH SILVER SALVER,
MARK OF ROBERT HENNELL, LONDON, 1863/64, THE SALVER WITH MARK OF D.C. RAIT, EDINBURGH, 1845,
The baluster tea & coffee service embossed with fruit & "C" scrolls, gilt interiors, the leaf-capped scroll handles with beaded rat-tails, each piece with oval reserve inscribed with a shortened version of the presentation inscription on salver, the latter with rococo border, on partly pierced bracket feet, surface flat-chased with scrolls & flowers on snake-skin ground, inscribed "Presented (with silver tea & coffee service & timepiece &c.) to Fletcher Read Low, Esquire, L.L.D. by his pupils of the High School of Glasgow, in token of their respect & esteem for him as their teacher, and their appreciation of the zeal, energy & ability with which he discharged his duties, as well as the kindness, disinterestedness & friendship which distinguished his intercourse with them. 6th May, 1870.", 17 in. diameter (43.2 cm.), all contained in it's original fiited box with original retailer's trade label of D.C.Rait & Sons, Glasgow, 149.5 oz. Further details
The High School of Glasgow continues to this day & awards an annual prize in Dr.Low's name. The Lows died without issue & the estate passed to Mrs.Low's yougest sister, one Jessie Jane Griffin, née Rae, & thence by descent to the present vendor.
