This design of this piece is close to that of a number of variant forms created by Crace for James Watt at Abney Hall, Cheshire in 1851/2 and derives from Pugin's design of 1849 for Eastnor Hall. Pugin collaborated with Crace on the overall scheme for Abney Hall and submitted a number of designs for decorative details early 1852. After Pugin's death, Crace was left to complete the commission, using both Pugin's designs and his own creations inspired by Pugin originals. The metalware on the present piece is almost certainly made by Hardman's of Birmingham to an original Pugin design.
