Lot Essay

The present lot is an excellent example of Van Strij's art. Particularly impressive is the detailed rendering of the tiles, wooden floor and lattice windows and the golden light coming from the courtyard on the middle plan. As pointed out by E.J. Sluijter, 'In Wedijver met de Gouden Eeuw: de Gebroeders van Strij en hun illustre voorgangers' in In Helder Licht Abraham en Jacob van Strij, 2000, pp.119/26, Van Strij here follows the formula developed by 17th Century artists such as De Hooch, Vermeer, Ochtervelt and Nicolaes Maes. The figures however are dressed in contemporary costume.
