AN ENGLISH BROADSWORD WITH 'MORTUARY' HILT
Mid-17th Century
With very broad flat tapering blade, each face of the forte with six fullers and centrally struck 'Clemens Willems Me Fecit Solingen' divided by running wolf marks, and above and beneath, in smaller letters, 'Susus. Me Fecit Solingen. Solideo Gloria. Sasas', beyond the fullers three deeply-struck bladesmith's marks, variously mermen and mermaids, the iron hilt of fine quality comprising solid guard merging with a knuckle-guard flanked by two vertical side-bars and four diagonal bars, with a further diagonal bar to the rear of each vertical side-bar, globular pommel with button, and later grip bound with silver ribbon and plaited silver wire, the guard chiselled in relief with acanthus foliage, lines of buds, and portrait medallions, the pommel chiselled with berries and foliage
