Lot Essay

Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708) was consort of Queen Anne, his second cousin. They were married in 1683, he was installed as a Knight of the Garter in 1684 and was chief mourner at the funeral of Charles II. In 1688 he deserted James II in favour of William of Orange and was sworn in as a new privy councillor to the joint sovereigns in 1689 and subsequently created Baron Ockingham, Earl of Kendal and Duke of Cumberland.

A similar example from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. R. Billington was sold in these Rooms, 27 February 1989, lot 150.
