AN IMPERIAL RUSSIAN OFFICER'S SHAKO (1855-62 PATTERN) Circa 1860
Of almost cylindrical form, the body approximately 7in. high, of black cloth with patent leather top and band at lower edge, peak (with 'stitched' design), the top encircled by a flecked gold cord terminating in ornate flounders and formalized tassels, the gilt shako-plate in the form of a spade-shaped shield (mounted with a letter K in Gothic script) surmounted by the double-headed eagle arms with the Romanov cockade in metal at the top and with a detachable 'tuft' of red cloth (an incorrect replacement) extending above shako, gilt chinscales with simple bosses, internal headband and lining of drab fabric (possibly replacement)

This pattern of shako was worn by a variety of regiments, including Dragoons and Infantry
