Lot Essay

On 19 October 1763, Natoire wrote to Marigny to inform him he had just returned to Rome, suggesting that this drawing was made in the latter part of that month (A.Montaiglon and J. Guiffrey, 'Correspondance des directeurs de l'Académie de France à Rome', Société de l'histoire de l'art français, 1901, p. 493). The Pincian Hill is just above the Piazza del Popolo in Rome.
