Lot Essay

Seago visited Istanbul in 1971, en route to Sardinia. James Reid (Edward Seago, The Landscape Art, London, 1991, p. 243) comments, 'Meandering along the Golden Horn in a small boat, or wandering along its edge on foot, is to follow in the paths of the Orientalist painters, writers and travellers who in the nineteenth century made Istanbul one of their favourite themes ... The exotic atmosphere, the mellifluous golden-blue haze and the eclectic range of colourful motifs harmonize to create the bewitching charm which so captivated Edward Seago'.
